Breast Augmentation
Who is suitable for breast augmentation surgery?
People with structurally inadequate breast volume, with a significant size difference between the two breasts, or who experience volume loss in breast tissue after weight loss, childbirth and breastfeeding are suitable candidates for breast augmentation or breast prosthesis surgery. In addition to the cosmetic benefits of this surgery, it also provides patients with psychological and social self-confidence and spiritual satisfaction.
However, in order to be a suitable candidate for surgery, it is important to be in good general health, not to have a chronic disease and to have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery. In addition, if there is no accompanying structural deformity in individuals under the age of 18, this operation is generally not recommended because breast development is not complete.
Implant types and differences
Implants used in breast augmentation have different characteristics according to their shape, content and surface. Implants are analyzed in two groups according to their shape: round implants and anatomical (drop or tear) implants. Roughly speaking, round implants are preferred in patients who demand significant upper breast fullness, while anatomical implants are recommended in cases where a more natural appearance is targeted. Which implant will be preferred is determined according to the patient’s body structure, skin structure and expectations.
The surface structure of the implants may also be different. Smooth surface, roughened and polyurethane coated implants are preferred according to the rate of stabilization and capsule formation in the pocket where they are placed. The size and shape of the implant to be used is decided after examination and consultation with the surgeon.
Recovery process and points to consider
Rest is important in the first days after surgery and it should be known that mild pain and swelling are normal. Although it is usually possible to return to daily life within a week, it is important to avoid heavy activities and to use special medical bras for the period recommended by the physician to support the healing process.
Although the healing process varies between patients, the first 1-2 weeks are generally known as a period of intense sensitivity. Swelling decreases within a few weeks and the breasts begin to look more natural. During this period, it is essential to follow the recommendations recommended by the physician such as movement restrictions, not lifting heavy loads and lying position.
After the surgical edema and swelling regress significantly in the first months, the result becomes more predictable. However, it should be known that the final shape may take 6 months to 1 year to fully emerge. During the healing process, it is very important to go to regular doctor visits, keep the incision sites clean and dry, and use the prescribed medications regularly.
How long do implants last?
Modern implants are durable and can be used for many years. Although there are warranty periods determined by the manufacturers for the implants, there is no need for implant removal or replacement operations unless medically necessary. It is sufficient for patients to continue routine breast controls after breast augmentation surgery and there is no need for additional controls unless recommended by the physician.
Does the surgery interfere with breastfeeding?
Since breast prostheses are often placed without damaging the breast tissue and milk glands, breastfeeding is not expected to be affected. However, this may vary in revision surgeries or depending on the differences in the surgical technique used.
What is the difference between breast augmentation and breast lift and augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure performed by placing silicone implants in people who have insufficient breast volume or who want a fuller appearance. This operation alone is sufficient if the shape of the breast and skin elasticity are appropriate and gives the breast the desired volume.
Breast lift and augmentation surgery, on the other hand, is preferred in patients with not only volume loss but also sagging problems. Since it will not be enough to place only implants in sagging breasts, the lifting process is also added and the breast tissue and nipple are moved upwards. Thus, both a lifted and fuller appearance is achieved.
