Arm Lift

What is arm lift surgery and to whom is it applied?

Arm lift surgery is an aesthetic procedure performed to correct sagging that occurs especially in the upper arm with age or after excessive weight loss. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity and as a result, loosening and excess skin occurs in the arm. Since it is often not possible to recover the excess in this area with sports or diet, arm lift surgery comes into play to give the person a tighter, more aesthetic arm appearance.

This operation is generally preferred for individuals who lose weight or who experience significant sagging of the arm skin due to aging. Arm lift surgery offers a permanent solution to feel free in choosing clothes, to move more comfortably in summer and to get rid of aesthetic concerns.

Preparation process before arm lift surgery

As with any surgical intervention, arm lift surgery requires not only medical but also psychological preparation. In terms of planning the surgery and determining the surgical technique, it is important to evaluate the excess skin and skin elasticity in the arm area in detail.

There are some important points to be considered before surgery. Smokers should quit this habit, blood thinners should be discontinued on doctor’s advice and a healthy diet should be followed. If any, getting the support of the relevant branches for the accompanying diseases will ensure that the healing process will go faster and smoother.

Recovery after arm lift surgery

In the early postoperative period, mild pain, bruising and edema may be observed in the arm. These complaints decrease over time and are replaced by a gradual relaxation. Patients can usually return to their daily activities at a light pace within a few days. During the recovery period, it is very important not to strain the arms too much, to avoid sudden movements and to use the recommended bandage or corset regularly. Not limiting arm movements in daily light activities, but at the same time resting the arms frequently in a position above the heart level (with a support such as a pillow underneath) will accelerate the resolution of swelling and edema.

Arm lift and liposuction

Arm lift and liposuction are intertwined procedures and although they are confused, liposuction provides the removal of excess fat and does not recover sagging skin. Arm lift surgery, on the other hand, involves the surgical removal of excess skin and fat tissue, providing both shaping and increasing the firmness of the arm.

Apart from this, these two methods are often applied together. During the operation, excess fat tissue is first removed with liposuction, and then the loose skin is stretched with the arm lift procedure. Thus, both a slimmer contour is obtained on the arm and sagging skin is eliminated. This method is especially preferred for people who have experienced excessive weight loss or who genetically have fat and sagging problems in their arms.

Will there be a scar after arm lift surgery?

Since the incisions made during surgery are usually planned on the inside of the arm, the visibility of the scar is minimized. Although the scars are more prominent and noticeable in the first periods, they fade over time, approach the skin color and their visibility decreases. Although it is not possible for the scars to disappear completely, regular care, use of cream and following the doctor’s recommendations make the scars more aesthetically acceptable. This is an issue that many people who are considering arm lift surgery are curious about. After the operation, the use of silicone scar reducing creams or patches prescribed by the doctor during the recommended period will help prevent puffy and poor healing of the scars.

Using a corset after arm lift surgery

Special corsets or elastic bandages are used to maintain the new shape of the arms after the operation. This helps to reduce edema and promote faster tissue adaptation. Although it varies between doctors, it is generally recommended to use the corset regularly for 4-6 weeks. Using the corset correctly and regularly will be useful in making the aesthetic results of the surgery long-lasting.

Will sagging occur again after arm lift surgery?

The results obtained with surgery are long-lasting; however, over time, skin elasticity may decrease due to aging and slight loosening may become inevitable. Regular weight control, healthy diet and sports habits help to maintain the results obtained after surgery for many years. Recurrence of significant sagging is rare and is usually related to lifestyle.
